PART VI — REDEMPTION AND THE LOVE THAT LASTED (2001–2003)

Chapter 20
The Strain No One Saw Coming

After Trish and I decided to marry, I found myself caught between two responsibilities. When we built a house and I moved to Montgomery, I continued to get Micah every other weekend and bring him there. It was the beginning of a new marriage, and I did not foresee the stress it caused between Trish and Micah. She felt pushed aside, though she wasn’t, and she became cold and short with him. I could tell he was uneasy being there. I finally told him that if he didn’t want to come back on the weekends, he didn’t have to. He never came back.

After graduating from Brazoswood High School, Micah decided to attend East Texas Bible College in Lufkin, Texas. My Uncle Buster Curry had set up a trust fund for Micah when he was a baby, and that Trust fund had grown and helped pay for his college. He graduated and went to work for Grainger, which serviced NASA with tools of all kinds. Micah was in charge of that account. He worked for Grainger for ten years and recently took a job with an electrical contractor in outside sales. We have tried to keep a close relationship; sometimes we succeed, and sometimes it seems like a long time passes before I hear from him. He is still single, so I don’t pressure him to spend more time with me.
