My three marriages taught me lessons I could not have understood as a young man. Cece and I married in 1967, and Ben and Bryan came from that marriage. Tina and I married in 1984 and had Micah. I will not erase either marriage because it ended; both helped shape my life.
With Trish, I learned the value of spiritual unity and a shared commitment to God. Affection and good intentions alone do not prepare a couple for every change in health, finances, or circumstances. I wish that the seriousness of the marriage covenant were emphasized more strongly when young couples prepare to marry.
We were not perfect, and our faith did not prevent illness or sorrow. It gave us a foundation when life became difficult. I would gladly have taken twenty-two more years with Trish, but I am grateful for the years God allowed us.
